As part of my blog I thought it would be fun to tell you about my unusual life.Currently I divide my time between two careers. I have a busy and successfulcareer as a Chartered Surveyor working on urban regeneration projects andat night change into The Romantic tenor.
I have always loved music and performed from a young age. I was brought up in a very musical family who sang together round the piano and were strong supporters of the local amateur dramatic society.
I trained from a young age on the classical guitar and became a professional player and teacher especially accompanying my wife Susan with Serenata, music for voice and guitar.
I also produced for Opera Live! plus due to lack of tenors occasionally had to sing small parts where required in opera productions. Susan a professional singer introduced me to her singing teacher world renowned soprano Marie McLaughlin. Marie said that with a lot of work I potentially had a great voice and after a short time was singing with touring opera companies.
The serenades always interested me. I was employed by friends and even my landlord whilst studying for my degree to serenade the girls brought to the house I lived in as part of an evenings work. This continued with my serenading of Susan at her hen night as well as accompanying her on the guitar in concerts.
The culmination of such serenading occurred when the composer of the words to the ‘Just one Cornetto’ advert (yes you remember that one) asked me to record a new version for his wedding anniversary.
My work as a Chartered Surveyor does lead to an interesting day sometimes where I might be chairing a meeting in the morning and then off serenading in the afternoon or evening. This takes a lot of planning not least what to wear at any given moment.
I also enjoy surfing and sailing and also skiing which help keep me in trim as well as exercising my lungs. These skills are also being developed in case there is a reprise of ‘and all because the lady loves milk tray’ chocolates advert where my skills would be ideal.
I released my debut CD in 2008 which comprises a number of Italian romantic serenades and which can be downloaded on itunes. These include 19th century salon favourites from Tosti and popular and passionate Neapolitan songs such as Core ngrato and O sole mio.
I am currently working on a new recording and working out which beautiful romantic songs to include as well as planning a UK tour.
